Contaminants
The Contaminants Committee develops methods to identify and test for physical, chemical & biological contaminants in cannabis medicines. Although the safety of the actual cannabis has been well documented, the medicine can harbor contaminants if improper methods of production, storage and handling are used. As a community, we have a responsibility to identify these potential dangers and practice safe methods that minimize such risks.
We are currently working on four objectives:
- Define a list of contaminants - such as fertilizers, pesticides, bacteria, mildews and molds - that are unacceptable in cannabis medicines. [WPM][IPM][EPM]
- Design a Bill of Lading/Quality Assurance Report (QAR) for PCCs, IMCs and EMCs to attach to cannabis medicines for dispensing collectives to evaluate and ensure safe production methods have been used. [WPM][IPM][EPM]
- Develop a scientific method for dispensing staff to detect contaminants on all medicines using sight, magnification, smell & touch.
- Work with analytical labs to test cannabis medicines for contaminants such as fertilizers, pesticides, bacteria, mildews and molds. [WPM][EPM] (No scientific method exists for testing IPMs)
